UK pirate radio pioneers to be celebrated in Jazz Café event series

Over the course of four Fridays in June, London‘s Jazz Café is going to host a series of events celebrating the UK pirate radio era and its influence on modern musical history.

The four-week series, ‘A History of UK Pirate Radio’, features some of the stars of stations such as Rinse FM, Kool FM and Eruption FM, among others, and kicks off with a couple of drum ‘n’ bass legends.

On Friday, June 7, Roni Size, who has been appearing on pirate radio since 1993, including on stations like Bristol’s Raw 101.1 FM, teams up with Metalheadz’ DJ Storm, the ‘first lady of drum and bass’ to celebrate the jungle and drum ‘n’ bass scenes.

One week later, on 14 June, Hackney native DJ Spoony, Wookie, and Lady Passion take to the stage, representing UK Garage.

On 21 June, Slimzee (co-founder of Rinse FM) & Flowdan, Coki, and Loefah headline, paying homage to Grime and Dubstep, while for the final instalment on Friday, June 28, Crazy Cousinz, Roska, and Cooly G bring UK Funky vibes.

As a press release for the series puts it, ‘Deeply rooted in the story of underground culture, past and present, the [Jazz Café] will showcase a programme of pivoting artists emerging from the golden era of modern music. Each week centres around the evolution of four trailblazing genres, with both live performances and DJ sets from the era’s finest exports.’

The Jazz Café, founded in 1990, has long celebrated both up-and-coming and established talent in the musical underground, with artists such as Wookie, Ray Keith, Skepta, and Roy Davis Jr among those to grace its stage over the years.
