Armenia-born, Portugal-based producer Your friend, daao, has developed a reputation for immersive, thoughtfully-crafted live and DJ sets, and he has brought that creativity to bear on recent EP Missing You: So Much, which was released in April.
Featuring four tracks – including the single disco baleari, which preceded its release – the EP is summed up by its creator as “a tribute to that inner child within me, beckoning me to return to a time when creativity flowed freely without constraint, reclaiming that pure sense of playfulness and spontaneity, unburdened by external distractions or self-imposed limitations”. You can check it out here.
For the latest edition of 909originals’ #MyRecordBag series, Your friend, daao reveals the tracks that influenced him most when putting together his latest EP.
Penny Goodwin – Slow Hot Wind
“When it comes to soulful music, the first name which pops into my mind is Penny Goodwin – a beautiful voice and a beautiful lady. There’s so much soul and passion in her voice, and I was listening to this record over and over during disco baleari from my EP Missing: You So Much.
This takes its influence from Penny Goodwin, especially Slow Hot Wind, which I discovered through Tyler, The Creator’s latest album, Call Me if You Get Lost.“
Gil Scott Heron – We Almost Lost Detroit
“I recently caught myself mostly listening to soulful stuff, and another special piece I was spinning over and over during 2023 is Gil Scott Heron’s We Almost Lost Detroit.“
Tetê Da Bahia – Duplo Sentido
“Recently moving to Lisbon, I found myself listening to a lot of Portuguese and Brazilian music. It really resonates with the state I am in right now and one of the perfect songs which was part of me recently is Tetê Da Bahia’s Duplo Sentido.”
Shifty – Jazz Ass
“Some old-school drum ’n’ bass from Shifty, which influenced me on the tempo of my productions.”
Kareem Ali – Pushing On Through
“Recently, I met a great musician in Sri Lanka, Kareem Ali. We were there to play a gig on the same line-up and we were also staying in the same hotel called Closenberg – it was a magical place. We were jamming and playing music all day long. His music is great, and I was listening to it a lot even before meeting him.”
