Top DJs, artists and agencies unite in the fight against single-use plastic
We’ve all seen the Boiler Room videos (and any other festival videos for that matter) – a DJ booth packed to the rafters with salubrious party people, sipping on various beverages from an array of plastic cups.
Now, some 1,500 DJs, artists, management and booking agencies have signed up to a new #PlasticFreeParty movement, developed by Bye Bye Plastic, which is helmed by Vivie-Ann Bakos aka BLOND:ISH.
As part of their pledge, the signatories reserve the right to ask for an eco-rider – namely, a DJ booth free from single-use plastic – as part of a drive to remove said plastics from the music industry by 2025.
Already signed up to the movement are artists such as Richie Hawtin, ANNA, Pete Tong, Honey Dijon, Ben Klock, Cassy, Sven Vath, Nicole Moudaber, Eats Everything, Annie Mac and Archie Hamilton, and Bakos is eager for the plastic-free pledge to become an industry standard.
“We’re in an absolute pivotal moment in evolution, where change is in the air, and silence doesn’t bring change,” she explained.
“Change is fuelled by movements. Movements thrive on community, creativity, participation and idealism. The secret ingredient aka superpower we have to add to this mix is MUSIC. It’s the absolute strongest glue, and the strongest human connector. We can’t forget that, so let’s use it endlessly for GOOD.”
The launch of the Bye Bye Plastic movement follows the unveiling of the Green Artist Rider by sustainability experts A Greener Festival, in association with Paradigm booking, as well as Orca Sound Project’s Blue Rider at Glastonbury, developed by Oceanic Global.
DJs including Eats Everything and Annie Mac have already taken the Eco-rider to the next level, encouraging clubs to contact BBP for advice on their transition to single use plastic free parties, or appropriate eco alternatives.
Bye Bye Plastic will also be seeking to assist clubs and festivals make the transition to event that are free of single-use plastics.
