More than a quarter century ago, in April 1999, Fatboy Slim took on Armand van Helden in a much-publicised DJ battle dubbed ‘A Date with Destiny’.
Trading sonic blows over a three-hour period, Fatboy appeared to gain the upper hand when he dropped a mashup known as Satisfaction Skank – a blend of his own The Rockafeller Skank with The Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction.
Now, some 26 years and eight months later, the long-circulated mashup has gained an official release, through Southern Fried Records and ABKCO Records.
“Over countless years I have always dreamed of an official release for this mashup,” Fatboy Slim commented. “It has been a favourite in my DJ sets for over a quarter of a century. I can confirm it is thoroughly road tested and fit for purpose.”
For the official release, Cook was given access to the original studio stems from the Stones’ 1965 recording of Satisfaction, and was able to rebuild the mashup from the ground up, combining the guitar line and vocal from the Stones’ recording with elements of his own track.
To mark the release, two videos have been produced – the first, produced by Tom Furse, combines photographs from Michael Spencer Jones’ archive with an (unfortunately AI-driven) reconstruction of the band as they appeared during the mid-1960s. A separate video by director Elliot Gonzo merges references to the Big Beat Boutique era of the 1990s with imagery inspired by the Stones’ archive.
