Specsavers has unveiled ‘The Testlist’, a guestlist programme for clubbers over 50, which grants access to exclusive music events with completion of a free online hearing test.
According to recent research commissioned by Specsavers, 75% of people over 50 still attend live music events regularly, while 47% said that they associate some of their happiest memories with music.
In addition, more than a quarter (27%) of respondents said that their generation ‘helped create club culture’, while 24% say they helped shape dance music culture. 🙂
Specsavers said the initiative is intended to encourage people to engage with their hearing, particularly as hearing loss can develop gradually. As its survey found, one in five (20%) said struggling to hear had reduced how often they go out, while 46% reported experiencing ringing in their ears after gigs. Around two fifths (38%) said that they do not take steps to prevent noise-induced hearing loss at gigs, while 61% said hearing protection would influence their choice of venue.
As part of The Testlist campaign, Specsavers will give over 50s who complete a hearing screener the chance to secure tickets to events across the UK and Ireland. The launch event will feature a Groove Armada DJ set at London’s Phonox on 15 October.
“We’ve been blessed to spend 30 years in the music scene, and nothing compares to that feeling of being in a crowd with sound so powerful you can feel it in your bones,” commented Groove Armada‘s Tom Findlay. “Our generation was the first to rave and they’re still on the dancefloor now. We put our ears to very good use and were way too busy having fun to think about the cost of it.
“I’ve experienced hearing loss and occasionally wear a hearing device, so I can really relate to this campaign. The Testlist gives people a reason to engage with their hearing so you can stay connected to the music you love.”
Other findings from the survey include that 44% of over 50s refuse to record every moment of gigs on their phones, while 22% say that they prefer to be fully ‘in the moment’, rather than thinking about social media.
