Underground producer Vase*Hagakure-13 has released Liminal Phase, Pt.2, the second and final instalment in his Liminal Phase series.
According to the producer, the Detroit-influenced track draws inspiration from theologian Rudolf Otto’s concept of Mysterium Fascinosum – the mysterious sense of attraction and ecstasy associated with spiritual experience – as well as his own experience DJing in east London’s warehouse rave scene.
Working alongside engineer Jesse Skeens of Medway Studios, the track evokes the “feeling of a vinyl track being played in a warehouse”, according to Vase*Hagakure-13, complete with turntable brake and spin-back effects.
Skeens, who has been a presence on the scene since the early days of rave culture, “particulary understands the Detroit techno sound and the vision I have,” the producer added.
Musically, the release reflects influences spanning Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, Luke Slater, Regis, Surgeon, Terence Dixon, Dave Clarke and Israel Toledo, while also drawing on the jazz sensibilities of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, as well as Vase*Hagakure-13’s own classical training.
As he adds, his motivation when making music is to “counter the divisive political climate in the world, promote unity and hopefully elevate the spirit”.
Looking ahead, the artist plans to launch a new techno night with a fellow DJ from the early warehouse era, with the aim of recapturing the “spirit of those early days, which has waned due to the commercialisation of dance music”. 🙂
