AMÉMÉ has unveiled a remix of Mundian To Bach Ke by Panjabi MC, the Punjabi-language global hit that topped the charts in several European countries at the tail end of the 1990s.
The remix, which was released on Altra Moda Music on 29 May, was developed after the West African producer met with Panjabi MC, aka Rajinder Singh Rai, who approved the reinterpretation of the track.
“Reworking this timeless classic through my own lens meant following no rules,” AMÉMÉ commented. “Bridging an infectious groove with my signature percussive approach, all leading to a powerful drop. Still can’t believe I got to meet the legend himself and receive his blessing.”
Originally released in 1998 and re-isued in 2002, Mundian To Bach Ke combined bhangra rhythms and dhol drums with a bassline based on the theme music from the television series Knight Rider.
Panjabi MC, hailing from Coventry, in England, blended Punjabi bhangra with hip-hop and electronic music throughout the 1990s, with his signature track appearing in movies such as Bend It Like Beckham and The White Tiger, as well as soundtracking the 2022 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.
AMÉMÉ, who was born in Benin and is now based between Brooklyn and Berlin, is the founder of afro-house label One Tribe Records, and recently announced a residency at Cova Santa in Ibiza. Last year saw AMÉMÉ appear at Coachella, headline Boiler Room Lagos and release collaborations including tracks with andhim, Malou and Angélique Kidjo.
Panjabi MC, AMÉMÉ – Mundian To Bach Ke (AMÉMÉ Remix) is out now on Altra Moda Music.
