Roger Doyle unveils new album, ‘Idir’

Roger Doyle has unveiled his latest album, Idir, his 35th long player in a career that has spanned electronic music, theatre, opera, film and experimental composition.

Roger Doyle has unveiled his latest album, Idir, his 35th long player in a career that has spanned electronic music, theatre, opera, film and experimental composition.

The album takes its name from the Irish word for ‘between’, and comprises electronic compositions, solo piano pieces and spoken word recordings, including a performance of a text by writer Sebastian Barry, delivered by actor Olwen Fouéré. Check it out here.

Dubbed the ‘Irish Brian Eno’, Doyle revived Operating Theatre, the experimental music and performance project he co-founded with Fouéré, for a one-off performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin last year.

909originals had the chance to catch up with both Doyle and Fouéré ahead of that performance, to discuss the Operating Theatre legacy – you can find that here. The spoken word recording on the new album originates from an Operating Theatre production staged in 1986.

Doyle also appeared at Irish festivals including the James Joyce Festival and Electric Picnic last year.

He is scheduled to perform live at Dún Laoghaire Summerfest on 8 July, supported by singer-songwriter Lucy McWilliams. More information on that can be found here.
