Irish electronica pioneer Roger Doyle releases new album

Roger Doyle, who has been a pioneering force in Irish electronica for more than four decades, has released a new album, We Who Live Under Heaven.

The six-track album, which is available now via Bandcamp, takes its name from a phrase in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.

“None of these pieces continue as they start – they change and are episodic,” Doyle says of the album. “Listening through to the end will be rewarding.”

The year 2024 has been a busy one for Doyle – he recently unveiled a 25th anniversary edition of his 1999 album Babel (originally released across five CDs) on All City Records, as well as teaming up with US singer Caroline Polachek, who covered his song Spring is Coming with a Strawberry in the Mouth.

Polachek’s cover was featured in a marketing campaign for fashion house Gucci’s Horsebit Fine Jewellery Collection.

Before the end of the year, he also has an upcoming performance at Dublin’s Button Factory lined up, supporting shoegaze rockers God Is An Astronaut. Tickets for that are available here.

Doyle’s musical journey started in the early 1980s, and his involvement in experimental theatre group Operating Theatre. The Babel project, originally conceived in 1990, was released in 1999, and was described as ‘a celebration of the multiplicity of musical language as the 20th century came to a close.’

Commenting on the release of the 25th anniversary edition of the album, All City Records said, We’ve been working with Roger for over half a decade now, this is the third project we’ve done together. Roger’s enthusiasm for making and performing music is a joy to behold and it’s an honour to bring his music back out into the open again!”
