Check out this mini documentary examining the importance of clubbing to Ireland’s culture

No More Hotels, Thinkhouse and Algorithm have come together to put together a fantastic mini documentary exploring the importance of clubbing to Ireland’s cultural firmament.

Featuring contributions from Dublin Lord Mayor Hazel Chu; ThisIsPopBaby’s Philly McMahon; Mona Lxsa, founder of Gxrl Code; journalist and co-presenter of United Ireland Una Mullaly; and designer John Mangru, the documentary examines what the eradication of cultural heritage (both through the closure of venues and the long hiatus of the pandemic), is having on Ireland as a whole.

As Mullaly puts it, “If we remove it from our society, if we judge it, if we curtail it, it’s damaging for us all. You may not notice it yourself, you may not want to go in somewhere and pay a tenner and dance to techno but the impact of those gatherings has a broader social impact, and it’s very healthy.”

The documentary also features an array of light projections on some of the most iconic former clubbing venues in Dublin, which took place on Culture Night last year.

As the Clubbing Is Culture project puts it, “If clubbing continues to be excluded from the traditional definition of culture in people’s minds, we’ll see the eradication of a culture that has persevered through some of humanity’s hardest times, has helped people survive and thrive and has been the catalyst for some of fashion, art, theatre and music’s most iconic moments. Culture.

“With this project, we celebrate the fact that clubbing brings people together, it provides growth, art and identity – as well as a rich economy. We celebrate how clubbing enables us to communicate, create and connect in unique and magical ways.”
