Carl Cox has announced the forthcoming release of a new version of Renegade Soundwave’s The Phantom, as part of Renegade Soundwave Rewired, a project bringing together artists to rework tracks from the UK act’s back catalogue.
Cox’s version of The Phantom is set for digital release on 24 September, and forms part of a series landing weekly on Jack Said What – digital releases began last Friday (10 September) with vinyl EPs scheduled for release from 8 October.
The Phantom was originally released in 1989, and featured a sample of The Clash’s White Riot. It also played its part in early rave history, through a sample used by The Prodigy on Everybody In The Place.
Cox has previously cited the original as one of his favourite tracks, and has been testing his new version, which features vocals from Dub Pistols’ Barry Ashworth, at festivals and during his residency at UNVRS in Ibiza during the summer.
Renegade Soundwave emerged from the UK’s late-1980s electronic underground, combining sound system culture with bass, breakbeats, house, industrial textures, punk and dub production. The group’s catalogue includes The Phantom, Ozone Breakdown, Women Respond To Bass, Probably A Robbery and the album RSW In Dub.
Other artists involved in the first wave of releases include Leeroy Thornhill, Nookie, Don Letts and Gaudi. Thornhill, formerly a member of The Prodigy, has reworked Ozone Breakdown, while Nookie and Binary State have taken on Thunder, originally released in 1990.
Elsewhere, Don Letts and Gaudi have reworked Wax Wane, with their take on the track scheduled for 17 September.
