Berghain bouncer Sven Marquardt to host New York Art Week exhibition

He’s better known for being the doorman of Berlin‘s infamous Berghain nightclub, but Sven Marquardt is also an accomplished photographer, and has just announced an exhibition taking place to coincide with New York Art Week.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Disturbing Beauty’ will see him exhibit a selection of his first photo works captured in 1980s East Berlin, which will be presented by Galerie Deschler Berlin.

It’s set to take place from 18-21 May at ArtsDistrict Brooklyn, with the opening night being accompanied by performances from a number of house and techno artists, as well as a video art installation in collaboration with Tavy Hornbrook.

“For more than thirty years, club culture has determined both my life—as a curator of countless nights—and, of course, my life as a photographer,” Marquardt commented.

“In a city in transition after the wild eighties and the fall of the Berlin Wall, I had for the first time put my camera aside. It was at the end of the 1990s that my camera again became a stylistic device for expressing our attitude towards life. Berlin has always been the setting as well as the inspiration for my pictures and projects.”

The photography exhibition follows on from similar events that Marquardt has hosted in Belgrade and Sydney, as well as a separate recent event in New York.
