Ewan McVicar drops remix of Double 99’s ‘Ripgroove’ to mark track’s 25th anniversary

Speed garage classic Double 99 – Ripgroove turns 25 years old this year, with Tim Deluxe and Omar Adimora’s stomper having soundtracked many a memorable night out in the quarter century since its release.

The original reached No. 31 in the UK Singles Chart, re-entering the charts later on in the same year with a new mix featuring vocalist MC Top Cat, peaking at No.14.

There is also a wider cultural context to the record. Tim and Omar’s parents came to London during the time of ’no blacks, no dogs, no Irish’, and as two young second generation immigrants in London, Ripgroove was their attempt to write music that could transcend politics, circumvent discrimination and allow people to come together to find common ground.

To celebrate the milestone, Double 99 have been releasing a string of re-recorded versions, as well as remixes of the UK classic – earlier this year saw the release of a rework by Daffy, as well as a Reimagination release incorporating a 16-piece string ensemble.

Now, rising Scottish star Ewan McVicar has got his hands on the track, with his Drop For 34 Knots remix not taking any prisoners, as you might expect.

It’s another chapter in the lengthy history of an all time dancefloor classic, and is released on 18 November. You can download it via the Double 99 Bandcamp page.
