Plastikman teams up with Chilly Gonzales on a re-imagining of classic album ‘Consumed’
Richie Hawtin’s 1998 Plastikman album Consumed has been re-interpreted in a new collaborative work between Hawtin and Chilly Gonzales, Consumed In Key.
Set for release on Tiga’s Turbo imprint on 1 April, the album, which has been preceded by a single, Contain (In Key), sees Hawtin and Gonzales re-imagine what was a pioneering release in the minimal techno genre.

As Gonzales, who has in the past dubbed Consumed the ‘science fiction of jazz’, put it, “To hear Consumed, to hear the freedom in how it was made, and to hear the confidence within which it stands behind so few elements was almost like a threat I had to respond to.”
With this in mind, he began to compose accompanying piano pieces for each track from the original album, with Tiga stepping in as the conduit between both artists.
Gonzales isn’t the only person for whom Consumed has been a hugely influential work – other fans include sculptor Anish Kapoor and fashion designer Raf Simons.
“[Richie] is such a master: the hardest, the best, technologically the most innovative,” Simons told W Magazine a few years back. “For years I have had a total obsession with Kraftwerk, and I think Richie is the Kraftwerk of today. He put out one CD Consumed, which is almost silent. You can’t dance to it – it’s atmospheric. I’ve used it a lot in my shows, and I listen to it all the time.”
