Legendary club night Trade gears up for 30th anniversary party
If ever there was a party that could be said to have set new standards for clubbing, it was after-hours club Trade, which originated in the early 90s at London’s Turnmills, and soon became famous across the world, both for its open door policy and its dedication to the harder edges of dance music.
As founder Laurence Malice told I-D magazine back in 2015, while the night originally catered for the LGBT community, it soon broadened its horizons. “As long as an individual had the right attitude they were welcome at Trade, regardless of their sexuality or social background,” he said.
“We had bankers dancing next to pop stars, muscle boys next to stage actors and this great freedom gave everyone the chance to express themselves through art, music, and fashion.”
Trade also helped establish some of the biggest names in dance music, including Tall Paul, Daz Saund, Fergie, Trevor Rockliffe, Smokin Jo and the late, great Tony De Vit.
Now, the original ‘all-night bender’ is gearing up to mark a significant milestone – a 30th anniversary party, taking place at Egg London, on 12 February, which will run from 6pm Saturday to 6pm Sunday – truly an event for 24-hour party people.
Some 25 DJs have already been announced for the event, including Andy Farley, BK, Boris, Daz Saund & Trevor Rockcliffe, Fat Tony, Fidelity Kastrow, Frankel & Harper, Hilit Kolet, Jeffrey Hinton, Knuckleheadz , Kyle E, Lisa German, Pagano, Paul Heron, Paul King, Remco Beekwilder, Smokin Jo, Tafkanik, Tall Paul, The Sharp Boys, VCL, Warboy and Wax Wings.
Phase 2 of the lineup is set to be released soon, while a very special guest DJ is also set to be announced on the day of the event.
The 30th anniversary show follows on from the much talked about 25th anniversary exhibition, ‘Often Copied, Never Equalled’, which explored Trade’s role in club culture, and featured iconic memorabilia from over the years.
Commenting on the forthcoming event, Malice said, “Trade has always been a melting pot for its crowd and its music. I can’t wait to welcome back our Trade family and introduce new audiences to our journey through sound.”
