Krautrock legends Tangerine Dream announce new EP, forthcoming album

Tangerine Dream are set to release a new EP, Probe 6-8, in November, ahead of a planned new album in early 2022.

The Krautrock pioneers, who currently comprise Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane, Ulrich Schnauss and Paul Frick (founder member Edgar Froese died in 2015) has been preceded by a video, Raum, which nods to the group’s early live studio performances.

Probe 6-8 borrows from Froese’s extensive archive, with the group gaining full access to his Cubase arrangements and Otari Tape Archive dating between 1977 and 2013. The result is a series of evolving ambient structures, paying tribute to the group’s timeless compositions of the 70s and 80s while also having one foot in the future.

The EP also features two remixes; Berlin-based composer and producer Grand River reworks the track Raum, while Berghain resident and Leisure System co-founder Sam Barker offers an ambient techno take on Continuum.

It’s their first release since 2017’s Quantum Gate album – their biggest seller since 1987 – with another album planned for early 2022, their sophomore effort following Froese’s passing.

Tangerine Dream have also completed more than a half-century of musical output, having formed in 1967, while albums such as Phaedra, Rubycon and Stratosfear were hugely influential on the development of electronic music. More recently, they even composed the score for the video game Grand Theft Auto V.

Prior to the pandemic, they were regulars on the gig circuit, with gigs at Dekmantel Festival, Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg and Barbican Hall, London, and the coming year sees them go back on the road, with a tour, ‘From Virgin to Quantum Years 2022’, that kicks off in Belfast on 2 March next year.
