Bye Bye Plastic unveils series of ‘Clean The Beat’ events, to raise awareness of plastic waste
Bye Bye Plastic, an initiative to raise awareness of and reduce plastic waste, has announced a series of global events under the banner Clean The Beat, at which all collected trash will be repurposed in keeping with a circular economy mindset.
The inaugural Clean The Beat event in Miami, saw artists such as BLOND:ISH (the creator of the Bye Bye Plastic Foundation), aDios, Archila, Differ, Malone , Ella Wild, Apache, Layla Benitez and Monoky join more than 100 beach cleaners to collect 3,136lb (1,422kg) of rubbish.
Of all the items collected, outweighing the rest by far were plastic bags and plastic bottles – 1,300 and 1,000 respectively – highlighting the need for dynamic action on reducing beach waste. Following the event, Clean The Beat’s partners in this case, Clean Miami Beach, RecycleGO and Precious Plastic, assisted with the conversion of plastic waste into raw materials and products with their own long-term value.
According to the official press release, ‘Clean The Beat is a new global event series of artist-led, musically-powered beach and city cleanups, with, crucially, sharply focused end goals for the resulting plastic collected. Namely, ‘circularity’ to extend the life cycle of plastic by putting it back into the long term economy, and data collection for vital research.
‘Sorting, counting and classifying each item creates an essential new record of information about the scale, and nature, of the plastic problem.’
Future Clean The Beat events have now been announced in Tulum, Barcelona, Bali and Amsterdam, with the possibility of a second Miami Beach event. The dates are still to be confirmed, however the Tulum event is scheduled for November/December, in partnership with conservation fundraising foundation Planet Buyback.
