Moritz von Oswald Trio tease first album in five years with new single, ‘Chapter 6’

Moritz von Oswald Trio, the electronica collective helmed by Basic Channel’s Moritz von Oswald, is set to release a new album ‘Dissent’ this coming August, its first long player in five years.

Released on BMG’s new classical/jazz/electronic imprint Modern Recordings (which is also home to Pat Metheny, Pantha du Prince and others), Dissent sees von Oswald team up with Detroit composer and performer Laurel Halo along with jazz drummer Heinrich Köbberling. It was recorded in November and December 2020, in Berlin.

It has been preceded by a new single, Chapter 6, a moody, electronic dub symphony, which you can listen to below.

The new album sees von Oswald continue to branch out into experimental and improvisational music, and is the Trio’s sixth album overall – other artists to have collaborated with the Hamburg native over the years include Tony Allen, Carl Craig, François Kevorkian, Ricardo Villalobos, Vladislav Delay, Max Loderbauer, Tobias Freund, Marc Muellbauer, Sebastian Studnitzky.

The album promises to showcase edits of ‘long explorative jams, from broad ambiences, uptempo dance, jazz sensibilities, noise, groove and dance, recalling some of techno’s jazzier inclinations’. A previous single, Chapter 4, was released earlier this year.

Collaborator Lauren Halo is an established artist in ambient, leftfield club, experimental electronica and film score music, who has collaborated with John Cale, Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku, Eli Keszler, Julia Holter, Lafawndah, Klein, LCO cellist Oliver Coates and fashion designer Eckhaus Latt in the past.

As well as being one half of Basic Channel, Moritz von Oswald has recorded in the past as Borderland with Juan Atkins; Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound with Mark Ernestus; 2MB/3MB with Thomas Fehlmann. He’s also known for initiating, mastering and cutting the Berlin-Detroit connection through early 90s collabs with Detroit’s Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Eddie “Flashin” Fowlkes, and Berlin’s legendary Dubplates & Mastering.
