909rewind Vol. 17… Sasha

Welcome to 909rewind, a series from 909originals that explores the early musical careers of some of clubland’s biggest names, uncovering hidden gems and familiar classics from the archives.

This week, as he celebrates his 50th birthday, we are proud to bring you a selection of tracks from an artist that as once dubbed the ‘Son of God’… an epithet that only partly describes his influence on dance culture over the past 30 years – the one and only Sasha.

As the artist also known as Alexander Coe told Mixmag back in 1991, when asked about his ‘style’, “It wasn’t a conscious thing to try to be different, but I just found that I always like to throw in really mad things. Things that were really different.”

It’s a legacy that he has maintained ever since.

With that in mind, here’s two and a half hours or so of classic cuts and remixes from the great man’s early career, up until 2002’s groundbreaking Airdrawndagger, produced alongside Charlie May.

Taking in tracks from Sasha’s debut The Qat Collection (produced with Tom Frederikse); remixes for the likes of Brothers in Rhythm, M People, Jimi Polo and D:Ream; 1996’s storming Be As One alongside Maria Nayler; and stonewall classics like Belfunk and Xpander, there’s enough here to keep you bopping till dusk.
