THROWBACK THURSDAY: Carl Cox – Let The Bass Kick [1991]
Techno legend Carl Cox is a national institution, having been at the forefront of the scene for close to three decades, and he hasn’t been afraid of dipping his toe into a myriad of different genres, as our recent playlist showcased.
Back in 1991, Cox was revered as the ‘three deck wizard’, bringing a level of dexterity and musical skill to countless raves and all-nighters, videos of which can be found on YouTube.
While the great man’s first official release under his own name was I Want You (Forever), released on Perfecto Records in 1991, earlier that year he showcased his talents on a rare, white label EP, produced by Basement Phil of Basement Records.
Let the Bass Kick, which combines samples from Landlord’s rave classic I Like It and The Break Boys’ My House Is Your House, among others, is five minutes of raw acid house goodness – a snapshot of the energy Cox brought to Fantazia, Eclipse et al.
“There was something about that mental playfulness in the early 90s, people didn’t give a fuck!” as house music duo Bicep described the track on their site a few years back. “I just love how stinking and raw this is, feels so live!”
