THROWBACK THURSDAY: FabricLive 07 – John Peel

Today, 25 October, marks the 14th anniversary of the passing of John Peel (25 October 2004), disc jockey, radio presenter, journalist, musical encyclopedia and all-round legend.

John Lennon famously once remarked that “before Elvis, there was nothing”, and the same could well be said for John’s influence on the musical leanings of a generation… from obscure The Fall B-sides to early Plastikman cuts, his nightly show was very much a case of anything goes.

In 2002, Peel recorded a mix for the FabricLive series of CDs, FabricLive 07, having also played a varied mix of tracks at a special night at the club in February of that year, some of which are featured below.

The release, which turned out to be Peel’s only mix album (a personal Peel Session, if you will), contains everything from classic soul cuts to indie essentials, as well as a crowd recording of the famous Kop belting out You’ll Never Walk Alone. It ends, fittingly, on The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks.

With the Fabric mix CD series now coming to an end (at least in its physical form) it’s arguably the most beautifully eclectic selection of tracks in the entire collection, and a fitting tribute to the great man’s inimitable style. Click here for details how to purchase it.
