Five great Dave Clarke DJ sets…

Today, 19 September, is techno legend Dave Clarke’s 50th birthday.

The Brighton native, who will be celebrating the occasion in style this coming Saturday at Fuse in Brussels, has been spinning tunes for more than 30 years, and with that in mind, 909originals brings you our five top Dave Clarke sets from over the years.

So, in no particular order…

Dave Clarke Essential Mix, 16 January 2000

The year 2000 was a big one for techno, and this BBC Essential Mix, which would go on to be named Essential Mix of the Year, contains some amount of belters, including Leftfield’s Phat Planet, Aztec Mystic’s Knights of the Jaguar, and Detroit Grand Pubahs’ Sandwiches among others. A classic techno trip.

Dave Clarke at Pygmalion, Dublin, 18 June 2017

To mark the 600th White Noise, Clarke played a secret gig in Dublin’s Pygmalion last year, and turned out one the most eclectic sets we can remember – it was a Sunday afternoon after all, so perhaps nosebleed techno wouldn’t have quite fit. Kicking off with Funkadelic and featuring tracks from Devo, Rammstein, The Cure, Talking Heads and Kraftwerk, among others, it’s a voyage through hip hop, new wave, EBM, electro and a lot more besides.

Dave Clarke Peel Session, 4 February 2004

Dave Clarke has long cited the influence on his career by John Peel; indeed, earlier this year, he told 909originals that he believed his career wouldn’t have turned out as it did without the assistance of the late BBC radio DJ. Back in 2004, a couple of months on from the release of album Devil’s Advocate, Clarke recorded a Peel Session at Maida Vale studios, largely comprised of his own tracks, with a couple of notable additions, such as Christopher Just’s I’m a Disco Dancer.

Dave Clarke at Fuse Brussels, 3 March 2000

Clarke and electro have long gone hand in hand – check out the Electro Boogie and World Service mixes – and this mix from 2000 is a masterclass in that particular genre. Tracks from Aux 88, Anthony Rother, Scan X, DJ Godfather and the seminal Clarke mix of Fischerspooner’s Emerge are some of the highlights.

Dave Clarke at Awakenings, Amsterdam, 30 June 2012

There’s no shortage of Dave Clarke Awakenings sets online, but we’ve plumped for this one for its relentless big room techno goodness. Standout tracks include Armando’s Downfall, Preacher Man by Green Velvet and Joey Beltram’s classic Mentasm, all given the Dave Clarke treatment.

Happy birthday Dave… and keep doing what you’re doing!
